1. Preheat oven to 400 deg F.
  2. Sift flour and measure; add salt and sift again.
  3. Combine shortening and boiling water in same pan. Keep over low heat until butter is melted.
  4. Add flour all at 1 time; stir vigorously over low heat until mixture forms a ball and leaves side of the pan.
  5. Remove from heat.
  6. Add unbeaten egg 1 at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition; continue beating until thick dough is formed.
  7. Force through a decorating tube unto greased baking sheet in strips about 1-inch wide and 4-in long.
  8. Bake for about 25 mins.



Ingredients (makes enough filling for 3-layer cake or Boston cream pie):


  1. Combine dry ingredients in top of double boiler; stir in milk gradually.
  2. Cook over boiling water until thickened, stirring constantly.
  3. Cover and cook for 10 mins (or slightly longer) stirring occasionally.
  4. Stir a little of the hot mixture into slightly beaten eggs or egg yolk; slowly stir in remaining hot mixture.
  5. Cook over hot (not boiling) water for 2 mins, stirring constantly.
  6. Chill.
  7. Add vanilla.
